How to draw a Good Enough sunflower

[blockquote source=”Pam Stewart”]If I were a flower.. I would be a sunflower.
To always follow the sun, Turn my back to darkness,
Stand proud, tall and straight even with my head full of seeds.[/blockquote]

Kansas is the Sunflower State, and this blog post comes to your today from the heart of the midwest–Kansas City!

So whether you love sunflowers, or simply want to stand proud, tall and straight–even with a head full of seeds–here’s how to draw a sunflower of your very own!

How to draw a Good Enough sunflower

Three Tips

  • A sunflower’s “face” is much larger than other flowers. I draw this part first to set the scale for the rest of my drawing. That way, if I draw it too small, I can adjust the size of my petals to keep it looking “sunflowery.”
  •

  • The petals of a sunflower are much smaller than its face. I tend to keep mine no longer than the flower face’s radius (the distance from the center of the flower to the edge of the flower face). When I make the petals longer than this, it starts to look more daisy-like. Two rows of these shorter petals are enough to communicate the sunflower idea.
  •

  • You can’t have a sunflower without the seeds! I add little dots to the face of the sunflower to reflect this texture, but you can also add crossed lines all over the face of the flower to reflect that texture as well. Play with both processes and see which one you like best!
  •
There you are! Instant sunflower! ;^)

And that’s it! What does YOUR sunflower look like? Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and let your creativity blossom!
