Let’s say you drew something at a meeting. Perhaps you took sketch notes for yourself and someone else saw them. Or perhaps you stepped up to the whiteboard and drew a concept for your team. Whatever it was, you drew something, someone else saw it, and that someone else paid you a pretty awesome compliment about your drawing.
What do you do?
If you’re not sure what to do in this situation, simply follow the three steps below and you’ll be in good shape:
How to receive a compliment
Seriously. Hear what they just said to you. Their compliment is a gift they want to give you. Allow them to give it, and allow yourself to receive it.
And if you’re at all tempted to discount it, deflect it, or say something disparaging about your drawing abilities after they’ve complimented what you created, don’t do it. Just smile, say “thank you,” and shut up. When you discount what’s being complimented, you discount the compliment…and the giver of the compliment as well.
Honor the giver by honoring the compliment. Hear it, receive it, smile and say thank you. You – and your compliment-giver – will be glad you did!
I cannot wait to see what you draw forth!
Love this Jeannel, so well said! x
Thanks, Claire! (she said, immediately shutting up afterwards.) ;^D
this is so elegant and simple and necessary – it’s great. and i love how you struggle to actualise it just like the rest of us 🙂 thanks!
Thanks, Aaron! ;^)
