How to draw a Good Enough Eiffel Tower in six steps

Ah, Paris. I’ve never been–except through the movies–but it’s on my bucket list!

And nothing says “Paris” in a drawing more than the Eiffel Tower. Built to honor the centennial anniversary of the French Revolution, this 105-story-high tower reigns supreme over the City of Light.

While the Tower itself remains a technological masterpiece of building-construction history, drawing the Eiffel Tower doesn’t have to require such a feat of engineering! So the next time you have a craving for a freshly-baked baguette and a healthy dose of romance, or simply an escape to an artist’s life with a view of Paris from your window, draw up an Eiffel Tower of your own! Here’s how:

Three Tips

  • My Eiffel Tower feels more solid when I draw it from the bottom-up. This means, however, that you need to make sure you’ve got plenty of room on your page up top for your tower to ascend! The scale actually gets set by the bottom arc (step one). Make it a wide and fairly squat one, because the next two levels will get built on top of it.
  •

  • Once I have that bottom level established, I look at how wide the top of that level is. For the next level, I make the top of it’s section one-half (or thereabouts) of the length of the level below. For the topmost level, it’s one-half of the center level. (These are probably not technically accurate, but they give the right feel for the proportion of the tower when I’m whipping up a Good Enough drawing of it!)
  •

  • The height of the center section is actually the shortest. The base section is a little bit longer, but of course it’s the sweeping height of the top section that makes the Eiffel Tower such a grand structure. That top section is a little bit taller than the first two sections combined. Add the cap at the top and the flag, and you’ll have a stately height!
  •
    Voila! Instant Paris!

And that’s it! What does YOUR Eiffel Tower look like? Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and see who starts singing you “La Vie En Rose!”
