How to Draw a Good Enough Person

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” -Albert Einstein

I have tried many new things. Creating these Good Enough drawing tutorials has been one of them. So has writing and illustrating my book. These things may not be perfect, but I am glad that I’ve risked making mistakes to actually get them done and into the world.

And I don’t corner the market on this one. Throughout the history of our world, countless people have tried new things. It’s why we have everything from champagne to blue cheese, electricity to sticky notes!

Today, pick up the pen and try something new. Draw a Good Enough person! Here’s how:

Three Tips

  • The spacing between the eyes and nose sets the scale for the rest of your person’s face. Wider-set eyes and more space between the eyes and nose would indicate a larger face. Because these are fairly close together, a smaller, narrow face is what’s wanted.
  • For the ear, I make a small “C” then continue the line around to make the jaw and side of the face, up into the hairline. You can vary the shape of that line from ear to hairline to create all sorts of faces…and facial expressions!
  • With this style of drawing, it’s enough simply to add the suggestion of a body. Our drawing still “reads” as a person by adding two lines to suggest the neck, shoulders and torso. You can always gussy up the torso lines by adding details like a tie or a necklace, too! Here’s an example from one of my “Draw Forth” illustrations:GoodEnough people

There you have it: instant person! ;^)

What does YOUR person look like? Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and let them try something new!

I cannot wait to see what you draw forth,

P.S. Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time?  Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it?
