On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued a landmark decision making gay marriage legal in all 50 states.
While there was a ton of celebrating going on when SCOTUS announced its decision, I couldn’t help but notice something else:
So many people interviewed, and so many of my friends, were saying things to the effect of “I never thought it could happen in my lifetime!”
Well, that got me thinking, because I was having a bit of a different reaction. I found myself thinking:
“Yes! First it was the decision for states to start taking down their confederate flags, now this marriage decision came through. . . we may finally be building enough momentum to make some serious changes! Next stop, racism and gun violence!”
Okay, you may think this way of thinking is a bit optimistic and pollyannaish of me, but I believe it. Down to my core, I do.
Mind Over Creates Matter
You see, a decade ago, Americans were not all that supportive of extending the right of marriage to gay and lesbian couples. Heck, as a Californian I still feel deep shame and embarrassment that my state passed Prop 8. . . and that was in 2008.
Seven short years later, the highest court of the land said “no” to rights for some and not for all. The New York Times, reporting on the ruling, shared that American public opinion had been fast-changing, and that most Americans support the unions.
At some point, enough Americans thought that it was possible to have marriage be an equal right for anyone who chose to say “I Do”. Love won. And our world changed.
Let Love Win . . . Again and Again
The way we view our world, the way we think about what’s possible for our world, defines what it can become.
Just as the way we view ourselves, the way we think about what’s possible for ourselves, defines what we can become.
Are you building up possibilities, or tearing them down?
Do you see the opportunities, or do you construct barriers?
What are you choosing to let win in your world?
Remember: our words are a manifestation of our thoughts. . . and our thoughts create our reality: What we say to ourselves matters.
What you say to YOURSELF matters.
Let love win for you today. What do you say?
I cannot wait to see what you draw forth,
