SKILL BUILDING

The Sketchnote Handbook: the illustrated guide to visual note taking, by Mike Rohde. If you want to draw for yourself in a safe – yet somewhat structured – way, then sketch notes are a great place to start.  And there’s no better book than Mike’s on the subject.  After all, this guy is the main reason why sketch notes have become so popular over recent years!  (Plus he’s just a great guy in general.)

Good Enough Drawing Tutorials.  This gallery features an assortment of tutorial images that walk you thorough how to draw, well, pretty much anything… usually in three easy steps.

The Back of the Napkin, by Dan Roam.  If you want to learn how to solve problems and sell ideas using pictures, this is THE book for you!  (It’s also one of my all-time favorites.)

PENS FOR PAPER SKETCH NOTING

I take the majority of my sketch notes on paper.  These are the pens I like to use:

Prismacolor Premiere Chisel Tip Marker. I adore this pen!  The chisel tip provides great variety in line width while drawing and writing… which suits my drawing style just fine!

I’m an ink-and-color kind of sketch noter, which means I draw out ideas using my Prismacolor chisel tip marker and then go back and hit the drawing with color accents using one of these two types of brush pens.

GOING DIGITAL

If you want to try your hand at digital sketch notes via tablet, here are some great resources for you to check out:

  • Visual Notes on the iPad, by Rachel Smith.  Rachel was one of the first people to use digital tablets for visual notes and graphic recordings.  She’s the one who inspired me to pick up the iPad and go digital.
  • Sketchbook Pro App for iPad.  Yes, I’m a Mac user.  I LIVE on this app!
  • Paper App for iPad, by 53.  Simple, elegant, easy to use, and easy to organize.  It’s my go-to app for when I want to doodle or take some easy sketch notes in a hurry.
