In business, we often get to explore the edge of what’s comfortable for us… our frontiers for what’s possible. And whether it’s because of my love of Star Trek, David Bowie, the glory days of MTV, or Col. Chris Hadfield, the icon for that lone adventurer exploring those strange new worlds is the spaceman. Perhaps he could come in handy for you as well!
Here’s how to draw a Good Enough spaceman of your very own!
Three Tips
- I start with the helmet for body placement and to ground the scale of the image. Remember, the helmet’s going to be bigger than the head inside of it… so plan accordingly!
- A spaceman’s got lots of cool gadgets and hoses associated with him (or her)… but a Good Enough spaceman has just enough gear to communicate the idea for you. In my case, a space person needs that crazy control box on the chest, and a big ol’ backpack. Perhaps yours wants a hose for space-walking! Whatever you want to draw is up to you!
- Don’t want to worry about drawing a face for your spacedude? Draw her (or him) with the visor down! That’s what I did this time. Use curved lines to outline the visor space, and draw a few lines across the visor to indicate the reflective surface… and you’ve got it!
And… a bonus tip!
- In the absence of gravity and wind, a flag’s not going to waive. So if you’re drawing a flag for your spaceman to plant into that recently conquered frontier, draw it with straight edges. Odds are good it will be supposed by a wire frame in space to keep the flag on display!
And that’s it! Looks out of this world to me…
What does YOUR spaceman look like? Don’t wait for the stars to perfectly align…draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and boldly go where no Good Enough spaceman has gone before! Kind of like this guy:
Space Oddity, performed by Col. Chris Hadfield
Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time? Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it? Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!
Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
