How to draw a Good Enough birthday cake

Sometimes you just can’t stop to whip up a marvelous birthday cake for a loved one. Like today! Today is my boyfriend’s birthday. Today is also the day I hit the road for an out-of-town project. (Sorry, kitten!) And since I won’t have time to actually bake him a cake on his birthday, I’ll do the next best thing instead!

Here’s how to draw a Good Enough birthday cake of your very own!

Three Tips:

  • The most important stroke you make for your cake is that first one… the one that sets the curve for the top layer of the cake. See how in step one it’s nice and fairly symmetrical? And see how in step two it looks like my cake’s going to have a lumpy top? Focus on drawing that smooth arc first… or even draw the top of the cake as an ellipse… and add the icing later.
  •

  • Speaking of the icing, I’m a gal who likes the old-fashioned look of an upper layer of icing falling down the sides of the cake. To achieve that effect, make your top section just a wee bit wider than your bottom section… just like in step three. This emphasizes the idea that there’s a thick, gooey layer of icing on top.
  •

  • Once your cake’s on a plate, that cake needs to be grounded… otherwise it will look like a birthday cake floating in space. Drawing some simple hash lines around the cake’s plate will imply that it’s sitting on a surface. Voila, instant grounding!

    For the Wee Ones:

Of course, sometimes you don’t want a full cake. Sometimes, just a wee little cupcake will do the trick to wish someone a happy birthday. Here’s how to whip up a quick birthday cupcake:
