I’d been driving hard to complete the final storyboard for a golf-related whiteboard animation video, when I realized that I almost forgot to write this Good Enough drawing tutorial! Talk about feeling off my game!
Ready to take a swing at things, but can’t find a ball to tee up? Never fear…you can always draw one up for yourself! Here’s how:
How to draw a Good Enough golf ball
Three Tips
When drawing a golf ball, it’s helpful to get the texture down…otherwise it could look like a ping pong ball. That texture shows up by the light catching the little ridges that cover the ball. Imaging the sun shining down on the ball you drew. It’s going to completely light up a circle, and leave the rest of the golf ball somewhat shaded under those texture ridges. So, when I draw texture I start by outlining a smaller circle with little upside-down curves. Then I fill in the “shadowy” part of the ball with more curves. Voila…instant Good Enough golf ball!
Drawing your golf ball on a tee makes it easier to see…and more recognizable as a golf ball to boot! The main thing to remember when drawing a tee is that it does not support the entire bottom of the ball. (That’s the mistake I typically make!) Rather, the curve of the tee holds the wee bottom of the ball. After all, A golfer wants that ball to sail cleanly off the tee…not stay in place like a soft-boiled egg! ;^) Tiny tee tops for happy golfers!
Lastly, the tee wants to be at a good length…but what’s the right length? Honestly, golfers place their tees at different heights, depending on the length of the club they’re going to use. Therefore, if your tee is equal to the length of your golf ball – like mine is above – then you’re just playing your driver! And if your tee’s low to the ground, perhaps you are simply playing your mid-iron! Where you place your tee in your drawing is Good Enough!
And that’s it! The next time you take a swing at something, you’ve got this mulligan waiting here for you. ;^)
What does YOUR golf ball look like? Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and go for a double eagle!
Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time? Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it? Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!
Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
