Eternal youth. Perfect beauty. Unbridled power. And the ability to start over again and again and again.

Not to mention the all-you-can-crush zombies.

Heck, what’s not to love about video games?

If you ever find yourself wanting to hit the reset button, or needing to become the Player One of your own game, simply draw up a video game controller of your own! Here’s how:

Three Tips

  • There are different types of controllers for different video game platforms. The shape you choose will speak volumes to an experienced gamer. (Disclosure: I am not an experienced gamer any more.) As tempted as I am to draw 1980’s Nintendo or Atari consoles, I find that drawing the shape of my controller as a loose “W” helps to keep things feeling a bit more modern.
  •

  • All video game controllers seem to have a basic set of buttons on them that you want to represent: directional controls, fire buttons, and those random buttons that inexperienced players like me press frantically trying to understand what they do before my character gets killed. (Again!) Our directional controls take the shape of the cross on the left, the fire buttons are the two in the center bottom (step six) that you can hit with your thumbs, and those random buttons are off to the right.
  •

  • Lastly, let’s talk about the cord. Now, I know there are cordless video game controllers out there, and that some gamers may look at the cord on our drawing and think that it’s so 2000’s! But I find that the cord really seals the deal for our drawing to be a gaming controller. Play with drawing your own controllers with and without cords and see which one resonates more strongly as “Video Game Controller” for you.
  •
And that’s it! What does YOUR video game controller look like? Don’t just log in and stay in the forest, killing boars until you’ve got enough experience points to go public! Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and see who else will join in the game.

Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth,
