How to draw a Good Enough bug

Have you ever been asked to bug someone about something so they remember to take action? Ever need to put a bug in someone’s ear to remind them of an important task? I had an acquaintance ask me to do this very thing recently… and that put the bug in my brain for this blog post!

Aaron Irizarry, this one’s for you! ;^)

Three Tips

  • When drawing a bug, I start with its body instead of the head. The head can be as big or as small as you want it to be, so the body size tends to be the component that grounds the scale of the critter for me when I’m drawing a bug.
  •

  • Shapes and sizes communicate personality in a bug. Play with different sized heads on the same sized body, and see how this one ATP changes the vibe for your bug. Or, play with the same sized head, but on different shapes for the body itself.
  •

  • All bugs have three body parts and six legs. And while you don’t always have to represent the three body parts to get your point across, you do need to keep the leg count right. If your bug’s got eight legs, we’ll think it’s a spider. If it’s got four legs, we may think it’s a funny-looking dog. Six legs? We’ll know it’s a bug!
  •
The beauty of this, though, is that it’s YOUR bug! Outside of it having the right number of legs, there is no one right way to draw a bug. And heck… if someone doesn’t recognize the type of bug you drew, claim it as a new species: insectum satis! ;^)

And that’s it! The next time you need to bug someone about something, let this little fellah do the work for you!
