How to draw a Good Enough flagpole

Got an interesting idea and want to see how folks respond to it? Run it up the flagpole and see what people think! And lucky you: January 2nd is Run It Up the Flagpole and See If Anyone Salutes Day! So if there was ever a day to test out an idea… this would be it!

What’s that you say? Don’t have access to a flag pole where you are just now? That’s okay… you can always draw up one of your own!

Three Tips

  • I start with the ball at the top to establish the size of the pole. Because flagpoles are tall, a large circle at the top means that it’s going to take up a LOT of my page. A smaller circle helps me to understand how long my pole will ultimately be.
  •

  • There is no “specific” length for a flagpole… so you get to choose the length that works for you! I tend to draw mine about three times the length of a person in the drawing. Play with drawing out flagpoles of different lengths, and see which ones you prefer!
  •

  • The thing that really gives your flagpole life is the movement of the flag. This in part is achieved by drawing in a halyard (or rope) that stands out a bit from the flagpole itself… almost like the wind is picking up the flag and blowing it away from the pole. So, if you draw your halyard extending a bit away from the pole, but draw your flag flying in the opposite direction of that imaginary wind, it won’t quite make sense to our minds. Follow the motion of your halyard and let your flag fly!

And that’s it! This year, don’t just sit on your idea and wonder if it’s Good Enough… run it up the flagpole and see who salutes!

What does YOUR flagpole look like? Draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and discover if folks see a flag or a pair of boxer shorts!

Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time?  Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it? Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!

Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
