How to draw a Good Enough Jolly Roger

Sure, I could go into a long, drawn out sequence expounding upon the merits of the pirate metaphor for the business sector… but I won’t. For September 19th is upon us, and that is more than enough reason to go full-sail into today’s topic. You see, September 19th is “International Talk Like A Pirate Day.” (It’s also one of my favorite holidays!) And while I may completely suck at talking like a pirate, I don’t completely suck at drawing a Jolly Roger… the emblem of all pirates worth their salt. So, avast ye mateys… n’ look lively! Fer it’s time te draw forth ye own Good Enough Jolly Roger, arrr!

(By the way, when attempting to talk like a pirate, if you find yourself getting flummoxed on what to say next, simply say “arrr” or “aye, matey!” Works like a charm!)

Here’s how to draw a Good Enough Jolly Roger of ye very own

Three Tips

  • An easy way to draw a skull is to think of it like an old fashioned key hole. The round part is the cranium, and the squared off part is the jawbone. Two big dots for eyes, a squashed Star Trek ensignia for a nose, and an odd number of lines for teeth… and you’ve got an instant skull! Aye, ye could get more detailed… but this guy’s good enough to get the point across! (See how I’m sneaking in some pirate-speak? ;^)
  •

  • Dem bones dem bones! The crossed bones behind the skull can sometimes be tricky… particularly in keeping them looking like the same two bones crossing instead of four different half-bones sticking out in all sorts of random directions from behind your skull. Here’s how I do it: I draw my first bone (which I totally imagine as a dog bone, by the way… hence the rounded ends) starting at the skull, drawing out, drawing the two bumps, drawing the line back to the skull, picking up the pen and continuing across the skull, dropping the pen back down and repeating the motion on the other side. For some reason, continuing that imaginary line across my skull helps me keep the two ends of my bone in Good Enough alignment. If ye be lookin’ at bones pointin’ off uh te four winds… give this’un a go!
  •

  • Think of the Jolly Roger as the jumping-off point for all things pirate… have fun with it, play with it, and see how ye wants te drawr it! Perhaps ye Jolly Roger wants t’ sport a bit’o color! Draw it up!
