How to draw a Good Enough ship

As folks start to think about strategic planning, seafaring metaphors come to mind. The Board of Directors sets the course for the ship… or the company may be navigating new or uncharted waters. When you’re about to embark upon a new strategic journey – or if you’re ready to burn a ship or two to achieve your goals – an easy-to-access ship may come in handy from time to time.

Here’s how to draw a Good Enough ship of your very own!

Three Tips

  • I start with the sweep of the ship’s hull because it sets the scale and direction for the image. The pointy part is the mast head, and I leave the back open in case I want to adjust the length of the ship for some reason. (I never seem to need to… but it’s how I draw it.)
  •

  • I find that three sails makes for a Good Enough ship: the rear sail is basically a “4,” the front sail is a reversed “4” and the center sail is the rectangular one. If you want to make it extra fancy, use two rectangles for the center sail. The larger rectangle sits lower on the mast, and a smaller rectangle serves as the top sail.
  •

  • If you want the wind in your sails, you need to draw that center sail with a curve toward the front of the ship. You can see in step 5 that my center sail looks fairly flat compared to step 6, which looks like the wind is in the sails. Especially when drawing ships for teams, you want there to be wind in the sails! (For extra pizzaz, add a banner/flag flying from tht center mast as well… but remember, if the wind’s in your sails then the tail of the flag will be blowing towards the front of your ship!)

And that’s it! Looks shipshape to me…

What does YOUR ship look like? Don’t wait for someone else’s ship to come in…draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and set course for a Good Enough adventure!

Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!

Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
