How to draw a Good Enough taxi cab

Whether you’re in the Big Apple or a traveller on the go, odds are good that you’ll hop into a taxi. And while taxis may seem plentiful on the streets of New York, actually finding one when you need one can be a bit of a challenge. The next time you need to hail a cab, or want to visually represent the blight on paradise that Joni Mitchell sings about, why not draw your own?

Three Tips

  • Drawing a taxi is basically just drawing a car… with a few extra features. I start with the wheels instead of the body, because the wheel size and placement help me scale the rest of the drawing. (Otherwise, I might get carried away and end up drawing stretch limos all the time instead!)
  •

  • There are two main additions to a car that makes it a taxi: the taxi sign on top, and the taxi markings on the side. And to me, that means the checkers of a checkered cab. When drawing the checkers, I don’t want lines to represent the non-black boxes, so here’s how I draw my checkers without lines:

  • Always make sure your taxi is on the road by drawing ground lines under the wheels. Without those grounding lines, your taxi may look like it’s zooming around in space instead of zooming about the streets of New York!

Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time?  Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it? Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!

Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
