How to draw a Good Enough umbrella

How are we going to weather the storm? What falls under our parent company? Whether you use one as protection against inclement weather, or you use one to group things together, odds are good that you’ve seen the umbrella used as a metaphor in business. The next time one pops up in business conversation, you can now be sure to have one at the ready when needed!

Here’s how to draw a Good Enough umbrella of your very own!

Three Tips

  • I like to start with the dome of the umbrella because it helps to set the scale and direction of the umbrella… surprisingly more so than starting with the handle. (When I try to start with the handle, the size of the umbrella ends up looking a bit off to my eye.) Even when I draw someone carrying an umbrella over their shoulder, like this drawing below, I still start with the dome:

  • To create the grip part of the handle, I simply draw a “J” shape overlapping the handle’s hook to build weight.
  • Your umbrella doesn’t need rib lines in the body to “read” as an umbrella. If you do add them in, the ribs of the umbrella correspond with the bottoms – or longest parts – of the scalloped edge.

What does YOUR umbrella look like? Don’t wait for a rainy day… draw yours up, Tweet it out to @jeannelking #goodenough, and have fun (as TUPAC might have said) fo drizzle!

Want to have fun drawing AND inspire others to pick up the pen at the same time?  Got something you wish you could draw, but you’re not sure how to approach it? Tweet your drawing or idea to @jeannelking and tag it with #goodenough: it could be featured in an upcoming “how to draw good enough” blog post!

Looking forward to seeing what you draw forth!
