Last month, I posted about how I was leveraging every penny I received into a quarter. Well, I just had to share today’s experience with you!
I had stopped asking folks to give me a quarter for a penny… not sure why, it just fell off for a bit. Because today has been so gosh-darned amazing for so many reasons, when I saw that penny on the sidewalk I picked it up and said “I’m going to trade you for a quarter with the next person I see!” And I did! Within minutes, I had a quarter in my pocket.
Walking back to my car, I found another penny! And I thought of two things: leverage and momentum. Was the Universe trying to tell me something? So I picked up the penny, twinkling in the sun, and said “okay Penny, I’m going to ask the next person I see to give me a quarter for you!”
The first person I saw was a lovely Asian woman. I approached her and made my usual request: “I’m pushing myself to ask for more big things in my life… would you be willing to give me a quarter for this penny?” She looked at me with a confused smile and said, “sorry, no understand?” D’oh! I had picked someone fluent in a language I didn’t know!
There was a moment where I thought, “well, perhaps I’ll see someone when I get back to my office and ask them… maybe… ” And then I saw him. The young man crossing the lot – towards my car – to enter the store. “What the heck,” I thought, rolling down the window and waving for him to come over so I could give it another try.
“Hi!” I said with a smile, “I’m pushing myself to ask for more big things in my life… would you be willing to give me a quarter for this penny?” He smiled, laughed, reached into his pockets, didn’t find any change, said “wait a sec,” turned around and went BACK TO HIS CAR, looked for change, walked back to my car, and said with a beautiful smile:
“I’m sorry, I don’t have any change. Would you take a dollar for it?”
Note to self: persistence pays off, and there is something to be said for leverage and momentum!
